Golden High School lost three students to suicide during the 2014-2015 school year. Since that tragic school year, administrators implemented Sources of Strength, an organization that provides “the highest quality evidence-based prevention for suicide, violence, bullying and substance abuse by training, supporting, and empowering both peer leaders and caring adults to impact their world through the power of connection, hope, help and strength.”
F4D Studio was hired by Foothills Art Center with funding provided by the Arts in Society grantmaking program to produce a documentary chronicling the community efforts to address the issue of mental health and teen suicide in the beloved Colorado town.
“Wall of Hope: A Source of Strength” features interviews from Golden Mayor Marjorie Sloan, former Colorado State Senator Mike Johnston, Denver artist Jolt, Golden High School psychologist Chris Reed, employees of Foothills Art Center, as well as GHS graduates and current students, among others.
The documentary revolves around three pillar projects supported by the Arts in Society grantmaking program. The first project featured Dr. Deborah Bryon, Ph.D., teaching an art therapy workshop at Foothills Art Center. The second focused solely on the freshman and sophomore students to Golden High School with an interactive theater performance organized by Affinity Arts Consulting. The final project focused on a mural created with input from GHS students and painted by Denver artist Jolt on a retaining wall in Golden that extended more than 600 feet.
